Diverse Customer Shoutout : Bozoma Saint John, Chief Brand Officer at Uber at SXSW 2018

"The onus should not be on people of colour to improve diversity at work  ... Why do I as a black woman - have to fix that? There's 50 of you, there’s one of me. Ya'll fix it.. Everybody else needs to make the noise. I want white men to make the noise. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT'S NEEDED."

Interestingly recently I consulted with a large IT Services company in Europe and I offered to run empowering sessions with their ERGs and minority groups & forums. They were quite surprised because they asked, shouldn't the majority be trained on unconscious bias as opposed to the other way around? I said yes but what's the guarantee that these sessions will work in arresting bias? I'm sure they do in most cases, but in bits and pieces.
Research shows otherwise. There is very little or no impact of these one-off sessions in changing implicit bias. Rather it may actually help in augmenting negative perceptions about differences. Instead if you empower your most underrepresented segments of employees who don't constitute  majority, there's a greater chance that they would ensure that they find a place in the system and stand up for themselves. Diversity should work both ways.

Hasn't Uber empowered Bozma to make this profound statement on a popular platform? This is exactly what I'm talking about.

I couldn't agree more. I firmly believe as a Diversity & Inclusion coach, that we all are people of colour. Even white is a colour. But racism is wrong, wherever its directed or in whichever way its described.

We need to stop separating ourselves by some useless characteristics and categorizations like skin colour...race...ethnicity, or gender etc..

Stay tuned for more INSPIRATION, INCLUSIVITY and AWARENESS of INTERSECTIONALITY at DIVERSE CUSTOMER!
